Working with a trained counsellor and psychotherapist offers an opportunity to grow and change in ways you might not be able to achieve on your own or with friends and family. The personal growth that may take place in therapy can free you from the limitations of old patterns. This allows more realistic and effective ways for improving the quality of your life, your relationships and how you feel about yourself.
The type of therapy I offer is psychodynamic psychotherapy, which is related to the idea that past experiences and events can influence how we feel and function in the present.
Therapy sessions are regular weekly 50 minute meetings where the client and therapist sit in a quiet and confidential room, and the client is given space to talk about whatever is troubling them. Psychotherapy can be open-ended or time-limited, and as the regularity of sessions is central to the work, commitment to regular sessions is necessary.
Some of the latest research, The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Therapy by Jonathan Shedler, shows that psychotherapy can help in the longer term. The research found that psychodynamic therapy is effective not only in relieving symptoms such as depression and anxiety, for example, during treatment but that individuals continue to improve once therapy has ended.
